Blu2Light at City Markets

Blu2Light Installation
Mercat del Ninot Market of Barcelona
In the place now occupied by this renowned municipal market, there was already an open-air market in the late nineteenth century.
The name of the Ninot Market is of popular origin and is linked to the figurehead that presided over the door of a well-known tavern in the area, very busy so it ended up becoming the social center of the neighborhood.
B2L system for lighting control
One of the main objectives of the remodeling and renovation that took place in the Mercat del Ninot, was energy saving and lighting control, so the old lights were replaced by new linear LED lights with integrated optics, and the lighting control system was installed. Blu2Light®.
The use of LED luminaires in combination with optics to direct the light into the aisles avoids light pollution at the stops, since each one has specific lighting according to the products sold, thus achieving great energy savings.
As far as the control system is concerned, the main objective was to comply with the CTE in terms of regulation in areas with outdoor lighting. And, secondly, to be able to regulate the lighting according to market opening hours. All this was achieved with a simple, autonomous, and versatile system, since it offers the possibility of changing the scenes at any time by mobile application, Tablet or push button.
At the same time, the control system had to be wireless due to the impossibility of wiring the different islands of stops between them, but without forgetting that it had to be a robust and secure system.
In addition to these two fundamental objectives, the lighting levels were also increased throughout the entire enclosure.
Why Blu2Light® as a control system?
It was essential to have a system that would allow centralized management of all the luminaires located in the common areas of the market, optimizing the administration and maintenance of the lighting.
One of the fundamental premises of the project was to avoid routing the DALI bus to the different “islands” of stops in the market. This reduced the complexity of the installation and minimized the structural impact on the building, which can be significant in historic or particularly designed spaces such as markets.
Blu2Light offers an advanced wireless solution based on Bluetooth®, eliminating the need for additional cabling. Its implementation allows for efficient communication between luminaires and dynamic, reliable control without compromising the functionality or aesthetics of the space.
Different lighting scenes were defined according to time slots and based on the amount of natural light. We also considered the holidays when the market is not active so that the luminaires remain off, such as Sundays and local holidays.
There is the possibility of activating the desired scene manually from a push button or from a tablet/smartphone:
ON: Luminaires on at 100% - OFF: Luminaires switched off
10%: Luminaires on at 10% - 50%: Luminaires on at 50% - 75%: Luminaires on at 75% - Regulation: Manual
Outstanding features of the installation
- Integral automation of the entire building.
- Activation of brightness scenes or automatic shutdown by means of timings by time slot or
- timings by time zone or manually.
- High efficiency and low consumption system.
- Low glare level (UGR), thanks to the optics used.
- Simplicity of DALI wiring.
The products
A total of 343 1,680 mm luminaires with a consumption of 35.1W and 5 luminaires of 1,120 mm and 23.4W were installed.
The use of these modules, together with the use of PrimeLine NFC L-R1 DALI2 dimmable drivers with an efficiency of 93%, has a total consumption of almost 600 meters of luminaires of 13kW. A saving of 47%, without taking dimming into account.
A total of 17 control nodes were installed, 3 of them being multisensors to regulate the areas with external light contribution.
Each node controls a set of DALI luminaires within the same island of stops, which can vary between 15, 40 and 64 drivers depending on the DALI bus power supply.
Scenes with different light levels were created and scheduled at different times of the day based on market usage. Compared to the pre-retrofit operation, which was 100% from 5am to 10pm and 30% from 10pm to 5am (switching off phases, not dimming), an additional 36% savings has been achieved by using LED technology.
In addition, by means of a Gateway it is possible to expand the possibilities of the system and control and monitor the lighting remotely.
Finally, to complete the overall Vossloh-Schwabe system, 85 Smart LiFePO4 1h emergency kits with self-test and fatigue test were installed.
The lighting remodeling has optimized the lighting of the aisles of the Ninot Market with a total savings of more than 65%. All this thanks to the combination of latest generation LED modules with 195lm/W efficiency, with the use of asymmetrical optics, plus DALI drivers with 93% efficiency, and together with a Bluetooth® control system.
